Three TTE learners have been named as the UK’s best process industry students.
National winners of the Salters City & Guilds’ Process Plant Operation Scheme 2018, Josh Ward, Quinn Hoban and Liam Walpole, were presented with their certificates at a ceremony at Salters’ Hall in London.
The awards are run in partnership with City & Guilds and the Salters’ Institute, with each receiving a £300 prize.
Quinn Hoban, 21, from Stockton-on-Tees was a City & Guilds Process Technology learner on a TTE Study Programme funded by South Tyneside College. He was the first of his group to complete all the modules required to complete the qualification and achieved high marks in all examinations. Quinn, whose work reflected high levels of detail and understanding, is now undertaking an apprenticeship at Lucite International (LI).
Faith Hambley, LI’s Learning & Development Officer, said: “Quinn impressed us with his drive and commitment shown during his studies at TTE and he continues to show the same high levels of effort and excellent work behaviours in his current role at LI. This award is thoroughly deserved.”
Josh Ward, 17, also from Stockton-on-Tees studied a City & Guilds Diploma in Process Technology at TTE as part of a group of 15 other apprentices representing various companies involved in the chemical process sector. Josh, who also gained high marks, was one of the youngest in a class of older and more experienced students. He is a Science Manufacturing Technician apprentice employed by Cogent and sponsored by Sabic.
Liam Walpole, 20, is employed by British Sugar and is undertaking a Level 3 apprenticeship. In order to complete the Level 3 City & Guilds Process Technology and other parts of his apprenticeship, he moved from his home in Lowestoft to Hartlepool, allowing him to study at TTE. Liam displayed excellent knowledge and skills, which were reflected in his high exam marks.

“Josh was one of the youngest in a class of older and more experienced students, but this did not faze him, and he produced outstanding practical and classroom work.
“Quinn used his knowledge and understanding to help and support others in the class to improve their chances of success, which is admirable. Liam was described by one tutor as “a born leader” who not only took responsibility for himself, but positively influenced his fellow learners.
“I’d like to congratulate all three who thoroughly deserve this prestigious award after displaying a great deal of determination, effort and undoubted ability.”
The Process Plant Operation Scheme (PPO) is aimed at learners already following a modern apprenticeship programme seeking a technical certificate, or if they wish to further their career within the process technology industry, and is well supported by industry including multi-national companies who operate overseas.
The Salters’ Institute allocates awards totaling up to £1,000 to top students at Level 3 of the Chemical Process Scheme.
The Salters’ Institute of Industrial Chemistry aims to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young, and to encourage careers in the teaching of chemistry and in the UK chemical and allied industries.
Dr Emma Sceats, CEO of Isogenica and a former Salters’ Chemistry Graduate Awardwinner, during her keynote address congratulated all the Awardwinners for their achievement and acknowledged that, ‘talented, highly-motivated Awardwinners are in high-demand and the 2018 Awardwinners have a wonderful opportunity waiting for them in a career in science’.
