North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

UK Residents and Businesses Focus on Clean Technologies

The British have a love-hate relationship with their natural surroundings. While residents love walking and exploring the British countryside, they also construct structures over these surroundings.

However, that does not mean that the UK does not deeply care about the environment. The nation has made a solid commitment to keep the water fresh while taking a closer look at ecological issues, such as coastal flooding and erosion.

Currently, it does not look good along the coast, as rising temperatures in seawater and the abuse of marine eco-systems has caused a noted loss in quality. Unfortunately, trawling of the seabed has led to degradation of the species and land.

Endangered Animals

To offset some of these difficulties, UK activists regularly focus on saving endangered species. Some of the beloved animals, marked as endangered include the hedgehog, whose numbers have declined from 36 million to a mere one million over the past seven decades, and the tortoiseshell butterfly.

The red squirrel and tortoiseshell butterfly represent other animals that have dropped in numbers in this part of the world.

Cleaner Water and Air

The more society expands, the more environmentally aware people become. Just like other developed societies, the UK has enacted legislation that targets certain environmental problems – problems that need to be resolved now and not later.

For example, programs that focus on water conservation and lower carbon emissions give emphasis to the people’s concern for clean water and air.

Currently, UK-listed companies must report carbon emissions in their annual reports. Inturn, consumers and investors can review a business’s carbon footprint, and make more insightful investing and buying decisions.

Clean Tech Investments

Companies and consumers now invest regularly in clean technology, as is evidenced by reports that show investments made in offshore wind and solar PV.

In fact, one 2014 report from PwC noted that projections for investments of this kind exceeded £10 billion. People have focused their “energy” on both wind and solar for some time. For example, 23 turbines at Ovenden Moore have been supplying wind energy for the past 15 years.

Since as recently as May 2018, approximately 8,880 wind turbines in the UK have provided about 19 gigawatts of energy, giving plenty of weight to the UK’s emphasis on this form of clean energy. Any technology that is developed electronically can also have a major impact on how people treat the land.

For instance, playing a game on a site, such as TheBingoOnline.com, supports people’s goals in sustaining the environment. You don’t have to spend money on building materials that can strip a forest of its trees, nor do you have to use great amounts of fossil fuel to light and operate a casino.

Indeed, this form of online entertainment helps the UK and other countries reduce the carbon footprint on their environment, thus increasing sustainability.

Solar Power Research

Besides wind power, solar power continues to be investigated, not only to improve its use but make it more sustainable. For instance, hybrid organic-inorganic peroskite type solar cells are currently being researched, as they offer the potential for high conversions at a reduced cost. However, at this time, environmental stability remains an issue.

In turn, scientists are reviewing ways to enhance the cells’ stability and still provide users with a high level of efficiency. One consideration being made is to use inorganic thin films that mimic the design of the device.

ALD Technology

An atomic layer deposition in solar cells, or ALD, seems to be the logical solution. This method supplies a one-of-a-kind tool for the growth and use of thin films, all supported by an amazing atomic-level thickness and conformity. Not only is ALD being investigated by scientists, it is also being considered for pilot manufacturing.

Because developed nations like the UK want to maintain their natural surroundings but also want to remain strong economically, the focus on clean technologies continues to develop.

A Hiker’s Paradise

Wind energy is the ideal vehicle for sustainability as using wind turbines do not distract from the openness of the landscape. In fact, Ovenden Moor, which provides a home to wind turbines, is also a hiker’s paradise.

Located between Keighley and Halifax, the Moor gives hikers a chance to witness incredible views, especially over the Thornton Moore and Leeming reservoirs.

Building is a good thing – as long as its focus is directed toward sustainability. UK businesses understand that making environmental contributions gives them an edge in this respect.
