YOUNG football players have been collecting food for those less fortunate this Christmas – following an appeal from a Northumberland care home.

The Ashington Town Under 10s Patriots and Titans donated 10 bags of canned and dried goods to The Oaks Care Home food bank appeal.

The home, in Blyth, has been delivering donations to food banks across the region this winter.

The football team’s collection was picked up at their Sunday match by senior care assistants Joanne Young and Sarah Geggie.

Joanne and deputy manager Clare Robson dropped the bags at Ashington Food Bank in time for Christmas.

Ann Mielnik, home manager at The Oaks Care Home, on Durban Street, said: “It’s fantastic that such a group of young people decided to help others less fortunate than themselves.

“There is a lot of hardship in the world at present and it feels great to help out where possible.

“The boys were so happy to be helping those in need and we are hugely grateful to the Ashington Town Under 10s Patriots and Titans for supporting our food bank appeal.”
