Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Volunteers sought for libraries’ summer reading challenge

Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 13.53.50North Yorkshire libraries are offering a great opportunity for people aged between 13 and 24 to get involved as volunteers in the Big Friendly Read, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The challenge will celebrate 100 years of one of the world’s greatest storyteller, Roald Dahl, and will feature some of his best-loved characters.

Every year, thousands of children flock to their libraries to take part in this national scheme produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by libraries – and your library needs your help.

The Summer Reading Challenge is one of North Yorkshire’s success stories, with more than 10,000 children expected to participate this year. By taking part as a volunteer, you will be helping even more children to improve their future chances by becoming more enthusiastic readers.

You will be involved with registering children for the challenge, helping them to choose books, talking to them about the books they have read and helping with library events. Be one of the first 160 volunteers to sign up and you will receive a Big Friendly Read T-shirt.

County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, Executive Member for Library and Information Services, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great incentive to encourage children to read and use libraries over the holiday, ensuring their reading skills don’t dip over the long summer break.

“It also provides a wonderful volunteering opportunity for young people to gain experience of working with children by encouraging them to complete their Big Friendly Read challenge and to promote the library as a place of wonder, excitement and fun.”

If you enjoy working with children and would like to play a part in encouraging them to read and to have fun over the school holidays, your library would love to hear from you.

To apply or to find out more, go to www.vinspired.com or contact your local library. Please apply by 24 June 2016.
