What To Do When Your Radiator Isn’t Working:

As the UK freezes under a storm known as ‘The Beast from the East’, we thought it would be appropriate to look over a topic for keeping warm, especially if your radiator chooses to fail. No matter who you are or where you live, nobody wants to be stuck in the middle of a freezing winter with a radiator that isn’t functional.

Here are a couple of quick steps you could take to evaluate your situation and solve the issue:

  1. Look at the big picture: The first important thing to do is to make sure that all the radiators in your home are working besides the particular radiator you are looking at. If you live in an apartment complex, it might be worth it to ask a neighbor or to what their radiator situation is like.  This immediately helps you realize whether the issue lies specifically with your radiator, or whether it is simply a symptom of an issue with the entire central heating system.
  2. Free your heat: One of the more common issues with radiators is that air becomes trapped inside of the radiator.  This often leads to a radiator working fine, but not being able to emit the kind of heat that you are accustomed to since air is stopping it from making your apartment or home as warm as it should be.  One reason why this happens so often is because air can get trapped over the summer, when most people don’t use their radiator often.  This is easily solving by adjusting the bleed screw so that you can ensure that your radiator “hisses” back to life.
  3. Valves: If neither of these solutions solve the problem, the next logical move is to check on the radiator valves. Ensure that the valves are open for the radiator to work properly.
  4. Debris: Sometimes the answer is as simple as external debris interfering with the radiator too much. Even if you don’t expect it, there can be objects or sludge that gets stuck in your central heating system, and prevents your radiator from warming up your living space.  In these situations, sometimes you may find out that you need a powerflush.  Powerflushing is a useful process where chemicals are utilized to remove the debris that has settled in the radiator and/or central heating system.

The bottom line is that nobody wants to be freezing in their home when they actually have a device that is supposed to keep them warm and cozy.  Everybody wants an affordable and efficient option to warm their house that is reliable, and permeates through your apartment and house quickly.  Most of the time, the problem is very simple and can be fixed.  Even if you feel like your radiator is fine, it’s always a good idea to check on the valves, debris, or whether any air is trapped, to see whether you can improve the way that it operates.  Of course, if none of these solutions are helping, it may be time to consult a professional heating engineer.  One thing is for sure – make sure to check on all of the little things, whether it is radiator valves, radiator outlets, or excess debris, to make sure that the issue is something you can’t solve on your own.
