Seven prestigious engineering scholarships have been awarded to engineering students by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East.
The QUEST Technician and Quest Technician Plus Scholarships are given to high calibre students, studying for a civil engineering qualification, where they can expect to receive up to £1,500 to support their studies. ICE North East awarded QUEST Technician scholarships to Julie Verrill, Scott Armstrong, and Jake Maughan, and Quest Technician Plus Scholarships to Jack Graham, Gemma Rodgerson, Matthew Jones and Josh Millican.
Teesside University degree apprentices Jack Graham and Matthew Jones are working with Capita, and Gemma Rodgerson is working with Durham County Council. Fellow Teesside student Josh Millican is placed with Cundall.
Julie Verril, from New College Durham, joins Josh at Cundall, and Jake Maughan, also from New College, is working with Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM). Scott Armstrong, from Middlesbrough College, has joined the team at WSP.
The two types of scholarships available are the Technician Scholarship, for ICE members studying towards professional qualification as a Technician (EngTech MICE), and the recently added Technician Plus Scholarships, which helps members progress to Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
Students were presented with their scholarship and certificate at Arup in Newcastle by the President of ICE Andrew Wyllie CBE, as part of his visit to the North East.
Andrew Wyllie said: “It is an honour to present these scholarship awards to such a talented group of young people. It is essential that we encourage the next generation of civil engineers to start exploring and developing ideas that will impact us all in the future.”

“The 2019 scholars are all very talented and deserving winners. Their enthusiasm, determination and dedication clearly impressed the panel of judges. There’s no doubt they all have promising careers ahead of them.”
