Youth initiative takes elderly residents back to 1940s Britain

Screen Shot 2015-10-20 at 11.34.24A YOUTH initiative from Hartlepool took elderly care home residents back to 1940s Britain with a reminiscence event.

The volunteers arrived in 1940s military uniform, told stories from the past and sang old songs – taking the residents back to their youth.

The event took place at Queens Meadow Care Home, on Stockton Road, with the volunteers giving up their time to entertain the elderly.

The Youth Volunteers Initiative (YVI) Headland was set up in 2003 to ensure the memory of sailors, soldiers and civilians from the 1800s through to 1945 are remembered.

Debbie Wilkes, activities coordinator at Queens Meadow Care Home, said: “It was amazing to see these young people arriving in the World War 2 period costumes.

“Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the stories and the singing. Not only did the activities help them recall their youth but they also enjoyed spending time with the young people.

“We can’t thank the YVI enough and hope they come back soon.”
