Striking Atrium Completed at Crowne Plaza Newcastle

Screen Shot 2015-04-09 at 16.14.56A new site milestone has been reached in the construction of the much anticipated Crowne Plaza® Newcastle – Stephenson Quarter hotel – with the completion of its impressive, seven story atrium overlooking the Central Station and Newcastle city centre.

The atrium made out of 114 individual panes of glass is over 25 metres high, allowing panoramic views over the city from all levels within the hotel.

Another striking feature to be fitted soon is a 17 metre high chandelier that will become the centre piece of the atrium.

The unique chandelier will comprise 156 individual poly-carbon globes, each suspended on its own wire hanging at different heights within the atrium. Shipped from Scotland, the chandelier will be hanging six stories down suspended from a mirror in the atrium’s ceiling.

The hotel’s general manager, Andrew Fox, said: “It’s very exciting to see the hotel coming together and some features looking even more impressive than I expected. Standing on the top floor of the hotel and being able to look over Newcastle’s city centre through the now-complete atrium is breathtaking.

“The building works are on schedule for a July opening, so I feel very grateful to be working with such experienced property developers as Clouston Group.”

Andy Grey, manager at project managing cosultancy Faithful+Gould, added: “It’s great to see a hotel of this scale coming to the city. Since I started working on the Crowne Plaza Newcastle project I’ve been amazed by its ambitious designs.

“The atrium is already a very impressive element and adding to that we’re fitting in a bespoke chandelier that weighs over 220 kilos and is 2.3 metres in diameter. Once complete, these two features alone will be a great attraction to the luxurious hotel. ”
