Even more ships, including another three stunning Class A vessels, have pledged their support for The Tall Ships Races Sunderland 2018. The new registrations bring the current number of ships to 21.

The newly enlisted ships include Wylde Swan, Alexander von Humboldt II, Morgenster , Helena, Spaniel, Black Diamond of Durham, Esprit, Vahine, Offshore Scout and Ocean Scout .

Wylde Swan is a ship built for speed and is also the largest two-mast topsail schooner in the world. Built to win races, cross oceans and be sailed with passion. The crew are very proud to have been overall race winner and winner of the Friendship Trophy in 2011. The aim of Wylde Swan all participating vessels is to provide as many young people as possible, the opportunity to take part in the adventure of a lifetime. Trainees are encouraged to join in and make most of the skills learned while working as part of a multi-national team.

Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: “This is truly great to hear. The fact that these ships have confirmed so far ahead of the event is great recognition of the work that is already underway to make next year’s races one of the biggest celebrations the region has ever seen.

“Recent figures highlighting an increase in tourism in Sunderland show that the City continues to develop a reputation as a welcoming city capable of successfully hosting huge events. I hope that as many people as possible find a way to become involved, support the event and give visiting crews a fantastic welcome.”

Director of Port of Sunderland, Matthew Hunt, said: “This will be the first visit for each of the newly registered vessels into Port of Sunderland and we’re really looking forward to welcoming them here next year. We are proud to play our part in helping to deliver a truly iconic event.”
