Richmond School GCSE results stories

TEAM GB athlete Jake Stephenson ran the extra mile in his GCSEs securing top grades on on the heels of winning a bronze medal for his country.

The 16-year-old Richmond School and Sixth Form College student took a podium place in the Canada Duathlon as a member of Team GB’s under 20s squad.

Back in Yorkshire, the Richmond and Zetland Harrier celebrated results including three A*s, three As, an eight in maths and a B and C. He plans to stay at Richmond Sixth Form to study A levels in maths, further maths, economics and history.

“The duathlon comprised a 5K run, 20k bike ride, ending with a 2.5K run,” he said. “It was an amazing experience and I would love to compete for Team GB again.”

All-conquering football captain Sean Thompson had two reasons to celebrate – top grades and the fact that the victorious school football team that has played together since Year 7, winning virtually every trophy, will carry on for another two years.

“They are a great bunch of lads and we will now play in the national college competitions,” said Sean, of Richmond, who secured a seven, eight and nine, three A*s and five As and hopes to read a degree at Loughborough University in the future.

“I’m just so excited and can’t wait for the season and my studies to kick off.”

Fresh from a high-altitude expedition to deep darkest Peru student Rosie Collier-Gent had to take a deep breath when she opened her results to reveal two nines, an eight and eight A*s.

“At times we were at an altitude of 4,600m where the air was very thin,” said the 16-year-old, of Richmond, who plans to stay at Richmond Sixth Form to study English, French and geography.

“I’d spent weeks walking round at home in a dust mask to acclimatise and thankfully wasn’t affected by altitude sickness. I had an incredible time volunteering in an impoverished part of Peru, building toilet blocks and renovating a school and I loved walking to Machu Picchu. I’m over the moon with my results.”

Justice prevailed for hardworking student Ben Dowson who secured top grades the same day he heard he had been selected to join North Yorkshire Police Cadets.

The 16-year-old, of Richmond, earned himself a nine, eight and seven, four A*s, two As and a distinction* in Btec sport.

“This has been the best day ever,” said the regional and national cyclo-cross competitor. “I’m aiming for a career in the police so this is a great stepping stone.”

The numbers definitely added up for mathematician Katie Williams as she picked up three of the top Grade 9s yesterday.

The 16-year-old, of Richmond, also secured seven A*s and one A in an impressive collection of 11 GCSEs.

Head teacher Ian Robertson said: “It is fantastic to see so many of our students not only succeed academically but have such rich lives in competitive sport and contribute so much to the local and global community.”
