Alexis Kennedy’s Cultist Simulator: Exile is More Than Just DLC

ByDave Stopher

May 4, 2020

Cultist Simulator, Alexis Kennedy and Lottie Bevan’s much-praised, award-winning digital card game in which one may have the power to create a “cult-like following” through their actions, is getting another update. In the two years since its release on May 31, 2018, Cultist Simulator has been ported to a number of platforms and built a cult-like following of its own, with players including Steam pioneer Gabe Newell.

In the year after its initial release, DLC packs called The Dancer, Priest, and Ghoul expanded upon the game’s vision, giving players more actions, possibilities, and endings to discover. However, for those who want more, Weather Factory is ready to celebrate the game’s second birthday in a big way.

Enter Exile

In Alexis Kennedy’s words, EXILE “shatters and remakes all the rules you knew.” EXILE is a story in which your player is chased all across a massive 1920s Europe by your past, your Foe, and the Madrugad.

There’s a massive collection of new art representing cats, fears, metaphors, and, of course, cities. As players traverse Europe, they’ll find themselves running through Budapest, Kaunas, Meshad, Granada, Amber Rostock, Red Vienna, Alexandria, and Marrakech, to name just a few of the thirty-three destinations to visit. The updated content also includes a new Legacy and seven Endings to discover, each of which are connected to the massive new world map within the game.

For each city, there’s history, atmosphere, and opportunities to discover new experiences. EXILE also adds a cast of new characters, including Zulfiya, Orsolina, Chaima, Mireya, and Vasil, whom Lottie believes “will become something of a fan favourite.”

As of early May, Alexis is in the process of wrapping up work on the game’s final content, ensuring a speedy delivery for EXILE’s Chinese and Russian releases, while Lottie is focused on production, marketing, and art development to make the expansion all that it possibly can be.

Beginning The Journey

EXILE will be released on STEAM, GOG, and Humble on May 27th – just four days before Cultist Simulator itself turns two years old. Without confirming any details, a recent blog post by Lottie also indicates that there may be a number of surprises coinciding with this anniversary to be revealed closer to date. However, “Only the hours know.”

Returning to the Tarot of the Hours

To satisfy demand after the rapid sellout of the physical edition of the Tarot of the Hours – the tarot deck at the heart of Weather Factory’s games – the microstudio is now releasing 200 decks each week. With production staying small, Lottie has been able to pack and ship each box to its destination while still focusing on EXILE and other upcoming projects, and the studio has created a dedicated, tarot-specific mailing list for anyone who has missed out so far but would like to get their hands on a deck of their own.

There will be more in the weeks to follow, but much like the experience of playing Cultist Simulator itself, the mystery is part of the journey.
