Plans for a second residential development on land to the north of Hurworth are set to be revealed by regional employer The Banks Group.
The County Durham-headquartered firm won planning permission last year for 95 new family homes on a 5.4 hectare site off Roundhill Road in the village, where North East housebuilder Bellway is soon to commence construction.
As part of putting together its initial proposals, The Banks Group considered a further 5.6 hectares of land to the north of the Roundhill Road site, but did not include it in the final plan due to perceived issues around its geological composition.
Subsequent ground investigation has since revealed that areas of the land are suitable for housing, and The Banks Group is now putting forward outline development proposals for a development up to 100 new family homes thereon, which will be known as Hurworth North.
Information on the outline scheme, and on the long-term economic, environmental and social benefits that it would bring to the local area, will be made available to the local community, with residents being invited to provide comments and ideas on what’s being proposed.
Once consultation has commenced and the technical information is gathered for the proposals, a formal planning application for the scheme is expected to be submitted to Darlington Borough Council within the next few months.
Lewis Stokes, community relations manager at The Banks Group, says: “When we were investigating opportunities in and around Hurworth, we discounted a parcel of land to the north of the village which we believed was unsuitable for housing development due to underlying ground conditions.
“Further detailed site investigation which has taken place over the last month or so has since indicated that this site to the north of our Roundhill Road site does in fact represent a viable development option, and we are now putting forward initial ideas on how this might be taken forward.
“We are now working to ensure local people, groups and businesses are fully informed of our new proposals, the various economic, employment, environmental, social and supply chain benefits that we believe they could bring to the area and how they can find provide feedback on what we’re looking to do.
“Our Roundhill Road development is raising a great deal of interest from people who want to stay in or move to the area, and we believe demand would be just as strong for this new development, should we win permission to take it forward.”
