Bishop Auckland’s revitalised market, which opened for trading on Thursday 27th April in the town’s Market Place, has been met overwhelmingly by enthusiasm and determination from both traders and townspeople.
Durham Markets Company has taken over the operation of the weekly Thursday Outdoor Market, and is looking to add further markets in the future. Colin Wilkes, Managing Director of Durham Markets Company, said: “Each week we’ve been pleasantly surprised. Our traders have shown such commitment, and the numbers of public coming have surpassed our expectation. However, we want to see this market grow. Whilst we are working hard to attract more and varied traders, we would urge the public to visit and support, particularly those who work in the town or live nearby. The market needs the support of both traders and the public to thrive”
Wayne Furnell, of The Auckland Cupcake Company, who has attended each market to date, commented: “I’m loving the market; the customers, the other traders, being outside in all weathers, all make it well worth doing! We’ve sold out every week, normally by early afternoon. Each week we make a few more cakes, and each week we sell out by the same time, but we’ll keep bringing more cakes. I remember how popular the market was 20 years ago, and was keen to support it as soon as I heard it was coming back.”
Colin concluded: “Each business in the market is small and locally-based. The money spent with these businesses is pumped back into the local economy, which benefits all of us. Each trader knows all about what they’re selling, it is after all their business and their passion, and we’d encourage shoppers to come and meet our traders, and ask any questions they may have.”
The Thursday Market currently averages just over 20 stalls, including 3 hot take-away food stalls. It is open from 9am to 4pm.
