Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Clearing the way for a great career with Sunderland

The University of Sunderland is once again getting ready for Clearing as students across the country make the call to secure their place on a degree course.

Our team of admissions staff will be ready and waiting at the end of our phone lines, with A-level results due on August 18 this year, to match students with available degree courses.

Clearing is a process where students who have not yet found a university place via UCAS can search for vacancies. It’s open to any student who hasn’t achieved the grades required, who hasn’t been accepted for their first or second choice university, or anyone who has not yet received any offers for a place at a university.

Last year more than 64,300 students went through Clearing, pursuing a wide range of subjects at universities across the UK.

Clearing is also an opportunity for anyone who has not yet applied for university, whether they’re looking to enhance their career, embark on a new challenge or simply follow their passions, #YouStillCan enrol on a life-changing course in September 2016.

There are a range of extended four-year degree programmes, which includes a foundation year, providing an alternative route into higher education if you don’t have the traditional qualifications or can’t meet the entry requirements for an undergraduate degree.

With 94 per cent of our graduates in work or further study six months after graduating, you could get one step closer to studying for a degree at Sunderland before the Clearing lines open, byregistering your interest today. Staff will call back to discuss your options and the courses we have available – we may be able to make you an offer over the phone.

If you wait until Clearing, more than 50 phone lines will be open, Sunderland admissions staff will be on hand to talk students through their options and discuss student life. But most importantly, they’ll be reassuring students that clearing should not be a time to panic, but a time to reassess their options, offering a chance to change their course, present fresh opportunities and a new direction.

Many of our students who once found themselves going through the clearing process are delighted they got a second chance thanks to Sunderland, making the most of those academic and employment opportunities on offer, resulting in a First-Class degree and a fantastic career.

Dr Lisa Frost admits that university was not right for her first time around – and took a break from academia to concentrate on family life.

But never giving up on her dream of returning to Sunderland to pursue a career in science, she contacted the admissions team during clearing and was delighted with the help and advice she received.

She was accepted onto a Chemical Pharmaceutical Science degree and enjoyed the course so much, graduating with a 2:1, that she was motivated to take on a PhD. As a result of this PhD project, which generated positive results towards discovering improved treatment of cystinosis, a rare disease, she is now working as a full-time researcher in the university’s Faculty of Applied Sciences.

“After A-levels, I went straight into university, but knew the time was not right, so I left, gave birth to my son and took time out to decide what I really wanted in life”, explained Lisa, from Sunderland.

“By age 25, I decided to bite the bullet, make the call to Sunderland once again and couldn’t believe how helpful the admissions team were. They gave me useful advice about the course I should take.

“Students should make that call to the clearing team, once they feel ready, they’ll be surprise at how much support is out there for you.

“I loved the degree course and the whole atmosphere at the university.”
University Admissions Manager Edith Wilson said: “Clearing has established itself as a hugely important part of the application process by offering second chances to students. In some cases it can help revive ambitions and confidence which may have been knocked by lower than expected A-level results.

“If the results you get are not quite what you were expecting, our advice is not to panic. You should get in touch with us to check if you still have the offer of a place. If you have not got the grades for the course for which you applied we may be able to offer an alternative.”
