Coeliac Awareness Month 2025: Shining a Light on an Overlooked Condition

May 5, 2025

Each May, the UK observes Coeliac Awareness Month, a vital campaign led by Coeliac UK to raise awareness about coeliac disease—a serious autoimmune condition affecting approximately 1 in 100 people. Yet, around 500,000 people remain undiagnosed, silently struggling with symptoms that often go unrecognized or misdiagnosed.

What Is Coeliac Disease?

Coeliac disease is not a food allergy or intolerance. It is a lifelong autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the small intestine when gluten—a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye—is consumed. This damage prevents the body from properly absorbing nutrients, leading to a range of debilitating symptoms, including fatigue, digestive problems, anaemia, skin issues, and more.

The 2025 Campaign: Know the Signs, Get Diagnosed

This year’s campaign runs from May 1st to May 31st, under the banner of empowering people to ask: “Is it Coeliac Disease?” With only 36% of sufferers currently diagnosed, Coeliac UK is urging anyone experiencing persistent, unexplained symptoms to consider the possibility of coeliac disease.

A central feature of the campaign is the free online self-assessment tool available at coeliac.org.uk. In just a few minutes, individuals can assess their symptoms and find out whether they should be tested.

The 64 Challenge: Fundraise and Raise Awareness

This year introduces the 64 Challenge, encouraging supporters to complete activities themed around the number 64—the number of symptoms associated with the disease. Whether it’s baking 64 gluten-free cupcakes, cycling 64 miles, or crafting 64 handmade items, the challenge is a fun and meaningful way to get involved while fundraising for vital research and support services.

Coeliac Awareness Week: May 12–18

A special highlight of the month is Coeliac Awareness Week, running from Monday, May 12th to Sunday, May 18th, 2025. During this week, community events, webinars, cook-alongs, and social media campaigns will amplify efforts to promote early diagnosis and education about the disease.

How to Get Involved

  • Take the Online Assessment: If you or someone you know has symptoms, don’t wait—use the free tool.

  • Request an Awareness Pack: Posters, leaflets, and postcards can help spread the word in workplaces, schools, and communities.

  • Join the 64 Challenge: Get creative and fundraise in your own unique way.

  • Volunteer Locally: Support local events through Coeliac UK’s volunteer network.

  • Share on Social Media: Use hashtags like #CoeliacAwarenessMonth and #IsItCoeliacDisease to amplify the message.

Why Awareness Matters

Left undiagnosed and untreated, coeliac disease can lead to serious health complications, including osteoporosis, fertility issues, and even some types of cancer. By raising awareness, supporting early diagnosis, and promoting understanding, Coeliac Awareness Month plays a critical role in changing lives.
