A small village near Easingwold that lost its village shop has set up quarterly markets to help fill the gap.
The markets have given the residents of Husthwaite and surrounding villages the chance to buy local artisan produce and products, quality art work, crafts, beauty products and their own Husthwaite ciders!
“They have proven very popular, increased in size and allowed small business traders to sell their products,” said Deborah Lewis-Green, one of organisers of the markets.
“However we were renting the stalls from the only supplier in North Yorkshire who decided to raise the rent without prior notice leaving the future of the markets in jeopardy.
“Thankfully we were successful in obtaining a grant from Hambleton District Council’s Small Grant Scheme which allowed us not only to buy our own stalls but also generate income from hiring the stalls out.
“We now on average have 25 traders and nearly 400 customers and the funds raised from the markets goes toward other events and services for the village and nearby communities. We owe Hambleton a big thank you as without the grant I am sure we would have lost the market too!”
