PUPILS from Northfield School and Sports College also joined the fantastic community spirit surrounding the Stockton Cycling Festival.

Members of the school’s STEM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) embraced the opportunity to design their own cycling banners and bunting to take down to Stockton on Sunday 26 June as they cheered on the riders in the British Cycling National Road Championships.

Grant funding was available to community groups and schools in the months building up to the Stockton Cycling Festival to help visually decorate the race route and to promote physical activity via cycling.

Emma Renwick, Assistant Head Teacher at the school, said: “The hosting of the National Road Championships in Stockton has provided our school with the opportunity to become involved in a really exciting and significant sporting event in our community.

“Pupils were very excited about watching the time trial event in Stockton and participating in the activities on offer as well as contributing to the decoration of the route and supporting the rides as they pass by. This has been a great chance to celebrate all that is great about sport and our area.”

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “This grant funding has been used so creatively by a variety of community groups, schools and projects across the Borough.

“It has been fantastic to see people of all ages fully engaging in the community and artistic aspect of decorating the race route to ensure that it looked brilliant as Stockton showcased itself to the wider world via the British Cycling national championships. Well done to everyone involved for their hard work and thank you for your inspiration.”

Hugh McGouran, Chief Executive of the Tees Valley Community Foundation, said: “It has been a pleasure to see this funding used so well and bringing people together to get behind their projects and in support of the Stockton Cycling Festival.

“It was brilliant to see the route lined with creative decoration and the excitement of these national championships has clearly connected with many people across the Borough and showcased the best of our local communities.”

The grant scheme was funded by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council in partnership with the Tees Valley Community Foundation.
