Several of Durham’s Independent retailers are joining the Totally Locally National Fiver Fest from 8th to 15th June, with the aim of encouraging locals and visitors to support independent businesses.
Colin Wilkes, Managing Director of Durham Markets Company who brought the Totally Locally concept to the city originally, commented: “Independents are the life blood of our city. They make our high street unique, and they offer shoppers something different from every other high street. More than that, independent businesses are staffed by people passionate about what they sell or the service they offer. These people are happy to share local knowledge making a visit even more worthwhile. Of course, money spent with local independent businesses is then circulated in the local economy, and that’s great news for all of us.
“The Totally Locally National Fiver Fest is a great campaign championing the importance of independent businesses in every high street. We want everyone to find out about their local independent businesses, visit any displaying the Fiver Fest poster and ask what today’s offer is. If everyone living in DH1 spent an extra £5 each week with local independent businesses, that would equate to £4.6million put into our local economy. So, with a small effort by each one of us, we can make a huge difference to our high street!”

The city’s independent businesses will be in the spotlight again at the beginning of July as Durham Business Improvement District (BID) holds its annual Independents InDurham campaign week.
