THIS SATURDAY (28 February) come along and join in the celebrations for the Chinese New Year at the Sunderland Museum, Library & Winter Gardens with lion dances, martial arts, craft displays and stalls.

To celebrate the Year of the Rooster there is a family fun day (11am – 3pm) including Chinese lantern making, zodiac animal badge making, chopstick challenges, lion dances and Chinese craft stalls. Performed by martial arts club Moi Fa the lion dances will take place at 11am and 1pm, starting from the museum reception.

Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: “This is an annual event run by Sunderland Museums and is a great opportunity for everyone to join the local Chinese community as they come together in celebration of this colourful festival. I encourage everyone to come along and join in the fun.”

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the the Chinese Luna Calendar. Beginning on 31 January, this year the zodiac symbol is ‘Rooster’.

There will also be a Chinese plants trail in the Winter Gardens featuring the stories of bamboo, rice and tea as this weekend’s celebration sets the scene for the Chinese New Year celebration on Sunday 5 February in Sunderland Museum, Library & Winter Gardens and Mowbray Park. Organised by Rough Diamond Entertainment and Asiana, this promises to be a yet another spectacular event in the heart of the city.
