Have you noticed that Scandinavian art is everywhere in Britain at the moment? There’s the BBC’s ‘Northern Lights’ series on radio, ‘Scandi noir’ crime novels sell millions and detectives such as Wallander and the autistic Saga have a huge following. And, of course it seems there’s always been IKEA!
Now entering the lists is Brita Granström, a Swede living in Northumberland whose exhibition ‘Love Letters’, runs concurrently at three exciting venues across the North East including: recent winner with the Good Hotel Guide, St Mary’s Inn near Morpeth, sister property Jesmond Dene House and Newcastle art gallery Gallagher & Turner from the 12th February to 14 April 2016.
Join us for the press preview event which is to take place on Thursday 11th February at St Mary’s Inn. Located near Morpeth, Northumberland and recently featured in The Times ‘Best New Restaurants’ the exhibition offers the opportunity to visit the pub and see some inspiring art pieces at the same time.
Although there are paintings of letters in this collection the title, Love Letters, signifies a broader love of the world rather than simply romantic exchanges. Whether Brita’s subject is of people, landscapes, the domestic and the everyday, a collection of moulded glass bowls or a bowl of flowers in front of a window, the underlying purpose is always the same: the energy of nature finds its equivalence in sweeps and scribbles of paint, shapes and colours which together encompass a myriad of expressions.
Brita Granström divides her time between Britain and Sweden, and her career between illustration and painting. Born in Sweden in 1969, Brita Granström studied at Orebro Art School from 1988 – 89 and then from 1989 – 92 at Stockholm’s University College of Art & Design. Since moving to England in 1993, she now lives in Berwick upon Tweed on the Northumberland coast but spends the summer months in Sweden with her partner Mick Manning, the author and illustrator with whom she has collaborated on many award-winning illustrated children’s books, and their four sons.
