From York with Love: A Guide to a Romantic UK City on Valentine’s Day

Feb 12, 2023

Renowned for its quaint cobbled streets, rich arts and culture, York is undoubtedly one of the UK’s most romantic hidden gems. With the season of Cupid fast approaching this famous English city is primed to welcome a wave of love-struck couples and if you’re planning to join them then you’re in for a real treat this February 14th.

From relaxing boat trips down the River Ouse, to candle lit dinners and chocolate tasting sessions, here’s our guide to things to do in York this Valentine’s Day.

Immerse Yourself in York’s Chocolate Story

Nothing screams Valentine’s Day more than chocolate; however, leave the store-bought box of treats at home this year and try something a little bit special by treating your beau to an exciting day out at York Chocolate story.

Nestled in the heart of the city centre, within a stones throw from the legendary Shambles, here you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the world of all things cocoa; take a tour around the chocolate museum and learn all about the region’s distinguished confectionary past.

After your tour’s finished, snuggle up with a sensational cup of hot chocolate from the museum café and whittle away an hour people watching. Before you leave be sure to check out the gift shop; here you’ll find a mouth-watering selection of chocolatey treats that may or may not last past February 14th!

Take a Romantic River Cruise down the River Ouse

It may not be Venice, but York’s River Ouse certainly retains a unique sense of charm and what more could you ask for on Valentine’s Day? Head down to the Lendal Bridge area in the afternoon/early evening and hop on board your romantic vessel (pre booking Valentine’s Day river cruises is advised).

On your love-laden voyage you’ll get to sip on a glass of something sparkling and enjoy a three-course meal as you take in some of the city’s most famous sights. Famous landmarks include the incredible Bishopthorpe Palace, the 13th Century home of the Archbishop of York and York’s iconic Roman City Walls.

Whilst on board you’ll also be able to enjoy music, entertainment, and live captain’s commentary.

Become Starry-Eyed At The Star Inn The City

York’s impressive foodie scene means that finding a restaurant to suit your tastes and culinary preferences is likely to be a doddle. However, if you really want to push the boat out and try one eatery that ranks amongst the best places to eat in York then consider booking a table at The Star Inn The City, located in York Museum Gardens, on the banks of the River Ouse.

This elegant riverside restaurant, which is run by Michelin-starred Chef Patron Andrew Pern, has developed a reputation for serving up outstanding modern British dishes, with a focus and top notch locally sourced ingredients.

In honour of Valentine’s Day the restaurant is pulling out all the stops, serving up an extra special  6-course tasting menu this February 14th. Dishes include a mouth-watering oak smoked North Sea halibut served with seashore vegetables and Whitby lobster salad, whilst dessert aficionados are set to fall head over heels in love with a luxurious bitter chocolate Cremieux complete with passion fruit and & cocoa nib. Advance booking is recommended, and diners will also be treated to a glass of fizz on arrival.

Treat Your Loved One to a Special Gift

Okay on the face of it shopping may not seem one of the most exciting things to do on Valentine’s Day (depending on who you ask of course). However, what better chance to buy your loved one a special gift to commemorate this amorous day?

Luckily York is blessed with a plethora of brilliant shopping options including the famous Coppergate Shopping centre where you’ll find a whole host of popular high street fashion brands.

Just outside of York you’ll also find York Designer Outlet, the perfect place to treat your other half to some big label goodies, without having to break the bank.

Finally, jewellery and Valentine’s Day are synonymous; if you’re thinking of picking up your loved one a bracelet, necklace, watch (or dare we say it a ring), you’ll find plenty of reputable jewellers scattered across the cobbled city centre streets.
