The Goose Lays a Golden Egg for Dementia Care

A North East dementia charity has received an unexpected windfall – from a West Yorkshire pub.

Dementia Care provides specialist care for more than 200 people with dementia in the North East each week, including 24-hour support in their own homes, independent supported living houses and respite care.

When word of its work reached Bradford pub landlady Shirley Evans, she swung into action.

She organised a fundraising day at the Ginger Goose, Market Street and, through tombolas, a cake stall, games and raffle, kind hearted regulars raised £1000 for the charity.

“We had heard about the work Dementia Care does and we decided to raise money for them simply because any one of us could get this,” said Shirley.

“I don’t personally know anyone with dementia, but my mum, sister, aunty – anyone could get it and I can’t imagine how that would feel.

“I would personally raise as much as possible to help them – it’s a very worthwhile cause.”

Dementia Care’s Head of HR and Training, Jane Thackray, who travelled to Yorkshire to thank Shirley in person, said: “We are all incredibly touched by this act of kindness.

“We are enormously reliant on public support and, understandably, that generally comes from people within the North East who have had a personal link with the charity or who have experienced dementia in their family.

“So for Shirley and her customers to go to all this trouble is really touching – and we are very grateful.”
