Volunteers are being sought to help guide the business of policing in North Yorkshire and York.
Last week, voters re-elected Julia Mulligan as their Police and Crime Commissioner for the area covered by the North Yorkshire Police Force. Over this new term for the commissioner, the North Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel will be tasked with providing an important check and balance on her plans for policing.
The panel is now seeking two people from North Yorkshire or York to join it as co-opted independent members in this next phase for a four-year term from October 2016. This will include reviewing the commissioner’s budget for policing, the level of council tax to be set and key appointments such as for a chief constable.
The panel currently comprises eleven councillors from across York and North Yorkshire and two co-opted independent members who can be drawn from a wide range of backgrounds.
“This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in supporting the commissioner and providing guidance on police governance and accountability,” said Cllr Carl Les, North Yorkshire County Council’s Leader, who chairs the panel.
“The role of a panel member is an important and demanding one and we welcome people with the necessary analytical and scrutiny skills from a wide range of backgrounds (paid or unpaid) such as community safety, victim support, criminal justice, the health service, advocacy, but also other sectors”.
The typical commitment is on average one day a month, including preparation. Meetings are held at various locations around the county, and panel members are reimbursed for travelling expenses.
