Jesmond Dene & Walker Park: It’s time to pick the nation’s favourite parks

Let’s help ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ find the nation’s favourite parks by voting for yours in the People’s Choice Awards.

This year an army of experts awarded a record breaking 1,797 Green Flag Awards to the UK’s very best parks and green spaces. The scheme is now asking the public to vote for their favourites.

Newcastle is proud to have two of its parks listed as part of the Green Flag Award winners, Jesmond Dene and Walker Park.

To vote for your favourite award-winning park, simply find it on the map www.greenflagaward.org and click the vote button. Once you’ve voted, why not encourage others to get involved too.

Voting for the People’s Choice Awards opens on 1 September and closes 30 September, with the top 10 winning sites being announced on 11 October.

Councillor Kim McGuinness, cabinet member for culture and communities at Newcastle City Council, said: “Newcastle’s enjoys an international reputation as a city with great parks and green spaces. It’s part of our heritage. Our parks are venues for people to enjoy, exercise, meet, play and spend time outdoors, in a natural environment whilst still in the city.

“We’re incredibly proud of our parks. It’s fantastic to have Green Flag Awarded green spaces [Jesmond Dene and Walker Park] in the city. We believe our parks are amongst the best and we’re incredibly excited they’re in the running to pick up the coveted People’s Choice Award. These parks are certainly some of the cities favourites. Let’s hope they’re recognised as being amongst the nation’s favourite parks too.”

Paul Todd, International Green Flag Award manager said, “Following the huge success of #LoveParks Week, the People’s Choice Award is another chance to show how much your favourite park means to you. Make your voice heard and vote now.”

Last year saw tens of thousands of people voting for their favourite park, with winners coming from all across the UK, from London to Lanarkshire.
