Veteran journalist and broadcaster John Sergeant will be presenting talented student journalists with awards at Teesside University’s annual ceremony.

John, an honorary graduate of the University, will be celebrating the brightest and best Teesside journalism talent at the event in Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art on 11 May at 5.30pm.

Joining a whole host of media professionals and staff to recognise the achievement of students, John will be presenting the awards and some sage advice to young people looking to start in the industry.

John was the BBC’s Chief Political Correspondent from 1992 until 2000 and the Political Editor of ITN from 2000 to 2002. He is still a familiar face on the TV with pieces on The One Show, a show in which he went round Britain on a barge as well as a twirl round the dancefloor on Strictly Come Dancing.

He received an honorary doctorate from Teesside in 2010 and studied journalism at Darlington College after Oxford University.

At the Journalism awards, winners are selected in categories including News Reporter of the Year, Best Feature Writer and Blogger of the Year and prizes include a number of placements with The Gazette, The Northern Echo and The Hartlepool Mail, along with work experience at Sky Sports News, The Sun’s Fabulous Magazine, The i, BBC Tees and Made in Teesside.

Jill Morgan, Dean of the University’s School of Design, Culture & the Arts said: ‘These awards recognise the hard work and excellent calibre of our current journalism students and it is inspiring for them to receive their awards from someone as renowned in the industry as John Sergeant, who has made such a significant contribution to political journalism.

‘I would also like to thank all the media organisations who generously contribute prizes to this celebration of our students’ achievements, and especially our main sponsors EDF.”
