Meanwhile ABTA says 87% of UK adults took a holiday in the last 12 months, averaging 3.8 breaks each. Dragonpass data adds a more specific twist, showing 28% of Brits now actively look for emerging or lesser-known destinations when deciding where to go.

The Long-Weekend Line-Up, Five Trips by Travel Type

For families: an easy-going coastal breaks

Izola, Slovenia
For families who want a seaside escape without the crowds, Izola is a strong left-field choice. It has the charm of the Adriatic, a slower pace than better-known coastal hotspots and the kind of relaxed atmosphere which suits parents trying to keep a short break genuinely manageable. It feels family-friendly without being overly packaged.

For couples: a relaxed coastal escape

Terracina, Italy
Terracina is well suited to couples who want Italy without booking the same destination everyone else has in mind. Set on the coast south of Rome, it combines beach, history and a more understated kind of romance than the country’s better-known short-break staples. For a bank holiday trip, it offers enough atmosphere to feel special without feeling overly stage-managed.

For friendship groups: a city break with style

Gothenburg, Sweden
For a girls’ trip with substance as well as style, Gothenburg is a strong option. It is walkable, well designed and social, with a good mix of neighbourhood restaurants, cafés, shops and cultural spots.

For solo travellers: an independent city escape

Wroclaw, Poland
Wroclaw suits solo travellers looking for a city with visual appeal, value and enough character to make a short trip feel rewarding. It has the architecture and atmosphere people often seek in more obvious Central European destinations, but with less predictability and more room for personal discovery.

For adventure goers: an active outdoor break

Gerês, Portugal
For groups wanting a bank holiday trip built more around activity than nightlife alone, Gerês offers something more distinctive. With hiking, wild swimming and dramatic scenery, it lends itself to a break which feels properly outdoors-led and different from the standard group getaway. It is a stronger fit for travellers who want movement, fresh air and a clearer sense of escape.
