An exhibition at Palace Arts Gallery in Redcar which displayed work by famous French artist Henri Matisse has been hailed a success.
Over 1,800 people, many of whom were visitors from outside of Redcar and Cleveland, visited the exhibition which took place from March to April of this year.
The exhibition of original prints, “Exactitude is not Truth”, included a number from one of Matisse’s most complicated and successful printmaking projects, Florilege des Amours Ronsard, illustrating the love poems of 16th Century French Renaissance poet Pierre de Ronsard.
Cllr Carl Quartermain, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills and Leisure at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council said: “As far as we are aware, this is the first time in Redcar that there has been an exhibition dedicated to Matisse’s work.
“I am delighted it has been such a success, and it is important that we continue to arrange such fantastic exhibitions for residents and visitors of our borough.”
Nel Hickson, Curator at Palace Arts Gallery said: “The feedback we had from both local residents and those from further afield was wonderful. The fact that so many visitors came from outside the area tells us that an exhibition of this calibre can bring many people to the borough.
“We are very pleased, as you can imagine, and hope to bring more work from major artists to Redcar.”
