Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen yesterday (29th June) met with the Aviation Minister, Lord Callanan to discuss the future of Durham Tees Valley Airport.

Commenting on the meeting, Mr Houchen said: “Getting people flying from Teesside Airport again was a key election pledge of mine – and one that I will deliver.

“International connections are vital for a growing economy, and I was pleased to have had the opportunity to discuss my ambitious plans for the future of our airport with Lord Callanan.

“A North East lad born and bred, it’s a sign of the Minister’s commitment to our area that this meeting was one of his first official duties.”

The meeting was also attended by Simon Clarke MP Member of Parliament for Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland.

Aviation Minister Lord Callanan said: “I had a very productive meeting with Ben and Simon.

“We discussed the future of Teesside Airport, and it’s importance in boosting connectivity to the North East, benefitting passengers, and helping grow the local economy.

“I look forward to working together on this issue in the future.”

Mr Houchen presented Lord Callanan with an aerial photograph of the airport, which the Minister has displayed in his office.

Mr Houchen also updated the Minister on the Tees Valley’s other strategic transport priorities, to invest in excellent road and rail links, to strengthen trade through Teesport, and ensure the Tees Valley benefits from the highest quality public transport services.  The Tees Valley Combined Authority is working with the Department of Transport on a number of nationally-significant investment proposals; including a new Tees Crossing, improved east-west road connections, radical improvements to Darlington station, and improved access for freight transport from the port.
