Joan As Police Woman – Joananthology Tour 2019

Joan As Police Woman releases her first career retrospective Anthology. The multi disc set collects thirty of her greatest songs alongside rare and unreleased material. Anthology highlights Joan’s remarkable first fifteen years of writing and recording music that defies categorisation. This compilation reveals her dedication to experimentation and vast knowledge and love of music of all kinds.
For her 2019 tour she strips her sound down to its true essence, performing her songbook solo with piano and guitar. This is a concert format her fans have longed to hear since her much loved solo shows in support of her 2006 classic debut album, Real Life.
These concerts will see Joan reimagine many of the key songs from Anthology and play songs from her upcoming second album of covers. Not to be missed.

Jónsi & Alex Somers: Riceboy Sleeps with the London Contemporary Orchestra
Friday 12 July, Sage Two, 8pm
To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Riceboy Sleeps will be performed live by Jónsi & Alex Somers with the London Contemporary Orchestra at Sage Gateshead on Friday 12 July.
A collaboration between the Sigur Rós singer and American visual artist and composer Somers, the album will be performed in its atmospheric ambient entirety for the first time.
Recorded at home in Iceland while Jónsi was on hiatus from Sigur Rós and finished off-grid in Hawaii, the album was a sleeper hit.
The album’s stature has only grown in recent years, with songs such as Happiness and Boy 1904 enjoying runaway success across some of the world’s most listened to streaming playlists.

Andy Fairweather Low and The Low Riders

Andy Fairweather Low came to prominence as the lead singer in Amen Corner. The 60s saw them clock up hit after pop hit. Songs such as; Bend Me Shape Me, Hello Suzy, and (If Paradise is) Half As Nice, are internationally remembered to this day
Since the early days Andy has gone on to work with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, The Who, BB King, Joe Cocker, Linda Ronstadt, The Bee Gees, Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Pete Townshend, and hundreds more.
The current band is also a who’s who of the best players on the rock scene. Joining Andy on Drums is Paul Beavis (Thea Gilmore, Robbie Macintosh & Sunday All Over The World) on Keyboards is Chris Stainton (The Grease Band, Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton and The Concert For George) and on Bass is long standing associate Dave Bronze (Clapton, Concert For George, Dear Mr Fantasy tribute to Jim Capaldi).

Hazel Findlay – The Climb Within

One of the best young climbers in the world, Hazel Findlay presents a talk about her life and climbs. She explores how we can use a sport such as climbing – something that we feel passionate about – to put us in hard places that push us beyond what we thought we were capable of. How in this struggle we can discover the way our minds work and how to ‘hack’ them, so that we can enjoy the experiences we want and not be limited by fear.

Fisherman’s Friends

Following their Winter Warmer tour, renowned Cornish shanty singers Fisherman’s Friends have announced a UK tour for September and October 2019.
The original ‘buoy band’, bound together by lifelong friendship and shared experience, for 30 years the Fisherman’s Friends have met on the Platt on the harbour in their native Port Isaac to sing the songs of the sea. A decade ago they were persuaded to sign the record deal that saw their album Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends go Gold as they became the first ever traditional folk act to land a UK top ten album.
The incredible true story of how that happened is told in the hit feel good movie of the year Fisherman’s Friends, starring Daniel Mays, James Purefoy, Tuppence Middleton and Noel Clarke with cameo appearances from the group whose voices also appear on the soundtrack. What’s more, in an incredible twist of fate, Pete Hicks who appears in the on-screen Fisherman’s Friends has now joined the actual line up and will be out on tour with the boys this autumn. The new film will be released in cinemas across the UK on Friday 15th March.

OMD 40 Years – Greatest Hits

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) continue their 40th anniversary celebrations with the announcement of a special world tour which includes a Sage Gateshead date. The band will be joined by both Martin Cooper and Stuart Kershaw.

Oysterband and June Tabor ‘Fire and Fleet’ Tour

One of the most exciting collaborations in folk music, June Tabor and Oysterband, resumes this autumn for a major tour. With separate distinguished careers to pursue, their appearances together are necessarily rare, so this is a must-see opportunity to catch them live.
The majesty and control of June’s voice combine with the passion of John Jones’ singing and the dynamic drive of Oysterband to illuminate dark traditional ballads and contemporary classics alike – witness their moving duet version of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart, widely regarded as the best-ever reinterpretation of that much-covered track. Songs from their seminal 1990 album Freedom & Rain and their multi-award-winning 2011 follow-up Ragged Kingdom will of course be featured, plus exciting new material.

Charlie Cunningham
Monday 4 November, Sage Two, 8pm
Charlie Cunningham has announced his return with the release of a brand new single Permanent Way which is the first new material from the British guitarist since the release of debut album Lines in 2017 and is a nod to more that we can expect from him in 2019.
Permanent Way finds Charlie embellishing his sound with subtly arranged synths and an upbeat tempo, whilst still allowing enough space within the arrangement for his distinctive vocals to echo and captivate.
Alongside this new release, Charlie Cunningham will make a return to the live stage.

Martin Stephenson and The Daintees

Martin Stephenson has been one of the UK’s best-loved musicians for over 30 years.
The Daintees’ critically acclaimed 1986 debut, Boat to Bolivia, opened up an always interesting story. It showcased Stephenson’s songwriting, poetic romanticism and spiritual depth – so marking him out as a soulful cream of the leftfield crop during the self-obsessed 1980s.
Never pandering to a particular scene, Stephenson’s lightness of touch on a varied mix of musical styles was immediately apparent. His path was destined to be a lifelong journey through the music he loved: folk, ragtime, jazz, rockabilly, show tunes, punk-pop and country.

Livewire AC/DC
Saturday 11 January 2020, 8pm, Sage Two
Live/Wire is the hugely successful and unique six-man tribute to rock music’s greatest band AC/DC, complete with cannons, a wall of Marshalls’ and over two hours of high voltage Rock ‘n’ Roll in a show critically acclaimed for its closeness in look and sound to the real thing. Both Bon (Dave) and Brian (Podge) are present on the Rock ‘n’ Roll train for a night to remember and with the rhythm section ‘locked in’ the freedom of the stage and the music is given to Simon as Angus Young who gives an uncanny performance with meticulous detail in appearance, energy and playing.
The band aim to put you slap bang in the middle of the show with hit after hit, and you are expected to join in. There’ll also be one or two gems thrown in for the aficionados.
