Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

New restaurant tapas into worldwide cuisine

BACON and cheddar doughnuts, deep fried bean cakes and sweet mandazi are among the tastes from around the world now available at a bijou Newcastle eatery.

Mr Petit, a small but perfectly formed restaurant, has recently opened in the former Al Buco at Old Eldon Square after being bought by St Camillus Leisure.

The restaurant offers a tapas-style menu, featuring small plates from all four corners of the globe.

Diners can choose from a selection of appetisers and snacks including pork and chicken crackling or anchovies priced at £4 each, and cheese or meat boards at £8 or £13.

Then it’s onto an adventure in tastes from around the world, with classic dishes from all of the continents.

Curried Indonesian sea bream with rice and Bombay potatoes are among the dishes from Asia, while North American treats include bacon and cheddar cheese doughnuts and Cajun sea trout and pomegranate salad.

There are Southern American classics like jerk chicken, mackerel escabeche salad and Caribbean rice and peas, while African inspiration comes from deep fried akara (bean cakes) with red pepper salsa, and Lamb Brik, a flaky pastry pocket filled with spiced lamb and tomato sauce.

Garlic and chilli king prawns and charred melon and feta salad bring a taste of Australia, and there is also a choice of European classics including kedgeree arancini, and French favourite coq au vin.

All dishes are priced from £4-6 and are designed to be mixed and matched, and can be followed by a choice of international desserts like sweet potato, pecan and orange cake, mandazi – a traditional Swahili spiced bun – with vanilla chocolate dipping sauce, lamington sponge cake and chocolate profiteroles.

John Heron, managing director at St Camillus Leisure Ltd, is confident Mr Petit can become one of the city’s leading restaurants.

“We wanted to offer diners in Newcastle something they haven’t tried before, and have created what we believe to be an innovative menu featuring exciting meals from all over the world,” he said

“Our team has worked hard to create modern, vibrant dishes made from fresh ingredients and we are looking forward to introducing more and more new customers to these international flavours here in the North East.”
