Taking their talents to new heights, Level 3 Performing Arts students at Middlesbrough College wowed audiences with The Jazz Corner – an immersive 1920s speakeasy experience that transformed Bloom Show Hall and Eatery into a vibrant cabaret club on 1st and 2nd April 2025.

Following the success of last year’s Broadway Bites, this was the students’ most ambitious production to date.

The original show blended musical theatre with a gripping storyline about a group of girls working in a cabaret venue, inviting the audience to sing along and immerse themselves in the lively, prohibition-era setting.

Thanks to the generous support of Bloom, who provided the venue free of charge, the students were able to push creative boundaries, staging an interactive performance that captivated a wider audience.

Nicola Scott-Hughes, tutor at Middlesbrough College, said: “I’m incredibly proud of what our students have achieved with The Jazz Corner. This performance showcased not only their talent but also their creativity, dedication and ability to truly engage an audience. They’ve worked tirelessly to bring this experience to life, and the response from the audience has been fantastic.

“A special thanks to Bloom for their incredible support in making this event possible!”

In addition to producing and performing the show, students took charge of its marketing – launching a dedicated TikTok channel to generate buzz across the college.

Their social media campaign helped build excitement and encouraged more students to attend, demonstrating the power of digital engagement in the arts.

Arianne Steel, Level 3 Performing Arts student, added: “Being part of The Jazz Corner has been such a rewarding experience. From writing the script to performing in front of a live audience, it’s been an incredible opportunity to develop my skills and bring something completely original to life.

“The support from our tutors and the venue has been amazing, and seeing the audience’s reaction made all the hard work worth it. I’m excited to take on more ambitious projects in the future!”

With rave reviews from attendees, The Jazz Corner solidified itself as a standout production, proving that Middlesbrough College’s Performing Arts students are a force to be reckoned with in the regional theatre scene.

Middlesbrough College’s Performing Arts programme provides students with hands-on experience in live performance, production and stagecraft, equipping them with the skills needed for a successful career in the industry.
