Sign Language Course Set to Start in Middlesbrough

A COURSE to learn sign language with Makaton sign and symbols – used in schools to support children with communication difficulties – has been set up in Middlesbrough.

Makaton is used to help communication with young people with autism, speech delay, learning difficulties and Down’s Syndrome.

The course will be held over 11 weeks at Grove Hill Community Hub on Bishopton Road, every Wednesday from 10am-noon beginning on Wednesday, April 26.

It is run by the Worker’s Education Association (WEA) and is free for people on means tested benefit or £58 for those who are not.

Topics will include signing your name, age, numbers, colours, animals, food and drink, school, work, transport, weather and clothes. Participants will also learn to sign songs and sign games.
