North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Spring has finally arrived and there’s plenty on offer at the Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum with a packed programme of events.

Among the highlights is a real treat for Lego fans as the Brick Alley LEGO Users Group hosts a special LEGO Show on Sunday 18 February, 11am-3.30pm. There will be a host of displays from LEGO City to Ninjago, Technic and – of course – LEGO trains. Admission included with usual museum entrance fee.

The Friends of Darlington Railway Centre & Museum will be continuing its series of Afternoon Lectures, which are held every month in the meeting room, from 1.45pm. All are free to members, while non-members are also welcome (contact the museum for membership or price details).

The next lecture, on Thursday 1 March, will feature “Land of Iron” – a talk by Tim Mutton of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park which reveals how 150 years ago many part of the North York Moors looked very different as short, but intense, periods of ironstone mining and railway construction had a huge impact on the landscape and its communities.

There are also two new temporary exhibitions opening at the museum in March.

The first, “A Saunter through the Steelworks”, is a photographic exhibition curated by the North Eastern Railway Association (NERA), which will be on display on the museum platform from Wednesday 7 March until Sunday 15 April.

Meanwhile, “Snack on the Track” invites visitors to take an imaginary journey and sample the delights of railway catering through the ages in an exhibition focussing on railway dining. It will run in the temporary exhibition gallery, from Saturday 10 March until Sunday 13 May. Normal entrance fees apply for both exhibitions, but do contact the museum for opening times.

Leona White-Hannant, Museum Manager Curator at Head of Steam, said:

“We’re delighted to be welcoming back some old friends as part of our latest events programme – the LEGO displays always prove very popular with visitors of all ages and we regularly work with the NERA and the museum’s Friends to help share rail history from around Darlington and beyond.

“Our constantly changing programme of temporary exhibitions means there’s always something new to discover at the museum, while our staff and volunteers are always on hand with a warm welcome for visitors old and new.”
