Tania tackles Great North Run after overcoming fear

A County Durham woman, who just months ago was too embarrassed to run in public, is preparing to take on the Great North Run this weekend.

Tania Young, 43, from Stanley, had always been terrified of running in front of others due to health problems.

But after completing Durham County Council’s Couch to 5K course, she is now hoping to inspire other non-runners with her success story.

Tania began the course, which is aimed at those who have never run before as well as people wanting to return to running after a break, in May.

She now runs regularly and even completed Durham City Run 5K in July. And this Sunday, she will tackle the Great North Run in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance.

Tania said: “I’d tried 5K in the past and failed. I had a problem with my balance and never thought I would be able to do it.

“I heard about my local Couch to 5K course and thought I would give it a try. I was anxious about going to the first session, but once I got there everyone was reassuring.

“Each week I was able to run further and gained more confidence. I’m not saying it was easy but I got there.

“I was so happy in week 10 when I managed to run 5K, something I never thought I would achieve.

“Earlier this year, I signed up for the Durham City Run and was so proud when I crossed the finish line.

Now Tania is encouraging others to enrol on the Couch to 5K sessions, which begin again this week.

Lasting 45 minutes, the sessions are designed to help people become healthier, happier and fitter.

“If anyone is struggling to get fit, I would encourage them to sign up for a local Couch to 5K course,” Tania added. “It’s not always easy but it has changed my life.”

Andrew Brown, Durham County Council’s principal physical activity manager, said: “Running is cheap, fun and easy to do – but for those who have never run before or who find it difficult, it can also be very daunting. Couch to 5K is aimed at exactly those people.

“We start with a mix of running and walking to gradually build up fitness and stamina. Week one involves running for just two minutes at a time but by week 10 the majority of our runners are ready to tackle a 5K.”
