The landlord is installing sprinkler systems to homes in partnership with County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.
Six properties with through-floor lifts were identified as being at risk, as residents would not be able to use the aid if a fire were to break out in their home.
John Potter, Head of Assets at Durham City Homes, said: “Much like a smoke detector would sound an alarm, the new sprinkler systems will kick in should a fire occur in these tenants’ properties.
“Tenant safety at home is paramount, and this will provide some comfort to those who have been recognised as being most vulnerable.”
The sprinkler installation programme will be rolled out across the summer.
