Screen Shot 2015-07-16 at 11.03.38THE latest in a series of heritage lectures will explore how our ancestors celebrated the opening of some of Middlesbrough’s best known landmarks.

The popular Tees Transporter Bridge Lunchtime Lecture Series will continue on Wednesday, July 29 with a talk by Teesside University historian Dr Ben Roberts.

He will deliver the second talk in the quarterly series that forms part of the Heritage Lottery Fund supported Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project.

Waving the flag for Middlesbrough: Victorian and Edwardian royal visits, opening ceremonies and celebration days in Ironopolis’ will explore key historic events in the history of the town including the opening of the Town Hall and Tees Transporter Bridge.

Dr Roberts said: “The laying of a foundation stone or the opening of a major public landmark meant a lot to the people of Middlesbrough in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

“Events such as the opening of the Transporter Bridge in October 1911 were chances to celebrate, show off the town to a visiting royal dignitary and most importantly, promote Ironopolis’ place as an important town with high hopes for the future.”

Tosh Warwick, Tees Transporter Bridge Education, Learning and Events Officer added: “Following on from Norman Moorsom’s fantastic talk on the origins of industrial Middlesbrough, we are delighted that Dr Ben Roberts has agreed to deliver the second instalment in the series.

“Dr Roberts sheds new light on landmark events in the area’s history and ‘Waving the Flag for Middlesbrough’ promises to be an enthralling exploration of celebrations in the Victorian and Edwardian Ironopolis.”

The lecture on Wednesday, July 29 runs from 12.30pm to 13.30pm at the Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre. Admission is free – advanced booking is recommended by emailing transporterbridge@middlesbrough.gov.uk or telephoning 01642 727265.
