The operator of the Tyne Tunnels is advising customers of extended night time single lane closures in January and February 2017. This is to allow contractors to access to the tunnel to complete important routine inspections and repairs.
These works will commence at 22.00, which is earlier than standard scheduled closures and will result in additional single lane closures to the northbound tunnel as detailed below.
North and Southbound passage is still possible 24 hours per day. These works are scheduled in the evening, when traffic volumes are at their lowest, to minimise congestion.
Week commencing 30th January 2017
The northbound tunnel will be subject to series of single lane closures commencing 22.00hrs until 06.00hrs for three nights commencing Mon 30th January until Wed 1st February.
Week commencing 6th February 2017
The northbound tunnel will be subject to a series of single lane closures commencing 22.00hrs until 06.00hrs for four evenings commencing Mon 6th February until Thursday 9th February.
These single lane closures are in addition to those that happen regularly, year round, in the Northbound tunnel on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 23.00 to 06.00, and in the Southbound tunnel on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 23.00 to 06.00.
