SEVERE weather brought a halt to this year’s Reindeer Parade – but gale force winds and driving rain couldn’t dampen the festive spirit.
The popular annual Parade and Community Carnival were due to take place on Sunday afternoon, followed by the Christmas Lights Switch On.
However rapidly worsening weather conditions and fears over the safety of participants and spectators prompted the cancellation of the outdoor event.
Severe weather predicted by the Met Office saw violent gusts snap the flagpole over the Town Hall, while the construction of the main stage in Centre Square had to be abandoned due to high winds.
At very short notice key elements of the parade were staged in the Town Hall, ensuring more that more than 800 children, family and friends were able to enjoy Santa’s Workshop.
Outdoor Christmas market stalls were removed at short notice – but shoppers looking for a festive treat could still find fudge, cake and jewellery on sale in the atrium at mima.
Councillor Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “The Reindeer Parade and Christmas Lights Switch On are hugely popular events which are eagerly anticipated by a great many people.
“The decision to cancel them was not taken lightly, but the prevailing weather conditions left us with no choice as the safety of all involved is of paramount importance.
“I’m grateful to the events teams from lovemiddlesbrough and the Town Hall and the many partners, contractors and volunteers who worked so hard to make the best of a difficult situation.
“I’d also like to thank all those who attended for their patience and understanding and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
