Yarm School is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Huw Williams as the school’s third Headmaster. Dr Williams, 41, joins Yarm from Tonbridge School in Kent, where he is Second Master (Deputy Head). He will be taking over from David Dunn who announced in September that he would be retiring after 20 years in charge of the leading independent school.
Dr Williams grew up in south Wales, attending welsh-speaking schools, until his family moved to Cambridgeshire when he was 15. Huw studied Anatomy and Developmental Biology at University College London before completing a PhD in early embryonic patterning at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Gurdon Institute. Following this, he completed post-doctoral research in the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and became a Research Fellow at St Edmund’s College in Cambridge. Huw’s teaching career started at Westminster School in London where he taught Biology, becoming an Assistant Housemaster and then the Housemaster of a Day and Boarding House. He left Westminster to become Second Master at Tonbridge from where he joins Yarm School.
Huw moves to Yarm with his wife Laura, a lawyer, and their three young children. He says “Becoming Headmaster of Yarm School is a huge privilege and I am tremendously excited to be joining such a successful and happy school following David Dunn’s exceptional leadership over the last 20 years. I feel a strong affinity with the school’s aims and values and I’ve been struck by the warmth of the welcome and the ambition and purpose of the pupils, staff and Governors at Yarm. Laura and I are thrilled to be moving to Yarm with our family and we look forward to many years of happiness in the school and as part of the wider Yarm community”.
Chairman of Governors, Mr Stephen Davidson, said: “We had a very strong field of men and women from which to choose our next and third Head and the Governors carried out a most comprehensive selection process before reaching their decision unanimously. We are delighted to appoint Huw and are confident that he will be a very worthy successor to David Dunn. We look forward greatly to welcoming him, his wife Laura and their young family to Yarm next summer.”
Mr Dunn will continue working for the school, seeing through the redevelopment projects which are planned.
