North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

British_Basketball_League_(emblem)We take a look at who got it done in the BBL during February.

The Scoring Machines
As in January, there were three players last month that managed to pass the landmark of 20 points per game and they were Cardell McFarland (Bristol Flyers) who led the way with 22 points per game, although he only stepped out onto the hardwood a couple of times. Whereas Andy Thomson (Esh Group Eagles Newcastle) featured in no fewer than six outings and corralled an eye-catching 20.8 points per game. Akeem Ellis (Cheshire Phoenix) who was January’s leading light points-wise, kept a place in the top three this time around with 20 points per game.

The Hot Hands
January was always likely to prove unbeatable with a trio of players having all shot more than 72% at the start of the calendar year, although the anticipated tail off wasn’t hugely significant. Olumide Oyedeji (London Lions) takes the honour of having been the most clinical player in February after he sunk 68% from the field. Jerelle Okoro (Manchester Giants) weighed in with 66% and the British star has certainly had his best few weeks in the league. John Barber (Sheffield Sharks) also hit a high-tide mark of 65%, while Tyler Bernardini (Leicester Riders) was the other post-60% player.

Deadly From Deep

February did see an uplift in success from behind the three-point line, with a trio of players making at least half of their attempts. Andy Thomson (Esh Group Eagles Newcastle) showcased his inside-outside game with 53% from downtown and another Brit forward in Dave Aliu (Cheshire Phoneix) also demonstrated his shooting range with 50% from the arc – a number matched by Riley Grabau (Glasgow Rocks).

The Glass Crashers

Daniel Edozie (Bristol Flyers) just missed out on double-digits in January and this time he finds himself on the top of the rebounding heap after pulling down 13 rebounds per game. He was one of five players to reach double-figures on the glass, with Cory Dixon (Plymouth University Raiders) grabbing 11.8 boards per game and Demond Watt (London Lions) occupying the last podium step with 10.4 per game. The Molten BBL Player of the Month for February in Kieron Achara (Glasgow Rocks) was next in line with 10.2 – the same return as fellow Brit, Dzaflo Larkai (Manchester Giants).

On The Line

There was no perfection from the line in February, with only Warren Gillis (Glasgow Rocks) surpassing the 90% mark after he dropped 13 of his 14 attempts. KC Ross-Miller (Surrey Scorchers) had a high volume month after converting 26 of 29 free-throws, with Rahmon Fletcher (Esh Group Eagles Newcastle) just behind on 88%.

Handing It Out

One of the most extraordinary displays during the period came from Marek Klassen (Leeds Force) who has proven a magnificent mid-season pick-up for the Yorkshire side. He racked up a staggering 40 assists in February and that equated to a wonderful 10 per game. Unsurprisingly, that eclipsed Rahmon Fletcher (Esh Group Eagles Newcastle) who had 6.3 assists per game and Callum Jones (Manchester Giants) who was next in the queue with 5.8 per game.

The Pick-Pockets

It wasn’t only offensively where Marek Klassen (Leeds Force) managed to shine, but also at the other end of the court too, since the guard led the way in steals with 3.5 per game. Danny Huffor (Cheshire Phoenix) topped January’s chart and he slips down a place after scooping 2.5 steals per game, with Jerelle Okoro (Manchester Giants) and KC Ross-Miller (Surrey Scorchers) were both locked on 2.2 steals per game.

The Swat Kings

The strongest theme of our ‘Statstars’ this season has been the continued changing of the player sat on our shot-blocking throne and February witnessed no change to the trend. This time it was Cory Dixon (Plymouth University Raiders) who found himself reigning supreme with 2.8 swats per game. Kieron Achara (Glasgow Rocks) took second place with 2.2 blocks per game and Adrien Sturt (Plymouth University Raiders) was a clear third from the rest of the field with two swats per game.
