The University of Sunderland’s latest Open Day will offer prospective students something a little different this month.
Undergraduate Open Days are the best way to see what university is really like, and the latest event on March 18, will be based at our City Campus and Sunderland will be offering ‘walk and talk’ tours of campus facilities in place of the usual subject talks.
Academic staff will be on hand to provide visitors with relevant information; whether students have already made Sunderland their Firm choice or are considering a late application. This is their opportunity to speak directly with their future teaching staff to gather all of the information they and/or their family need.
Prospective students can find out about the university’s range of support services, go on a tour of our accommodation and look around the campus. They’ll also be able to attend talks about Student Finance, UCAS and late applications and Why Sunderland.
The Open day runs from 11.30am until 6pm, on Friday, March 18, meet at Sciences Complex, City Campus, Chester Road, Sunderland.

Case study – Karina Rooney
In 2010 Karina Rooney attended a University of Sunderland Open Day without a clear idea of where she would study- four years later she has graduated and embarked on her second degree at the University.
“I originally wasn’t going to come to Sunderland but when I came to the Open Day I knew it was where I wanted to be,” she said. “It sounds cheesy but it felt like home instantly and I could see myself studying here.”
Karina studied Law and has been keen to promote the University to future students. During her second year she took part in Sunderland’s award-winning Lives Online project, blogging about her experiences in the hope of inspiring others.
“Lives online was truly fantastic and opened so many doors for me and I wanted to help inspire other students and make them see that university isn’t all about working on assignments and having your head in a book all day; there are trips, social events, societies and other things to do outside of lectures.”
Originally from Scotland, Karina is now firmly a part of the North-East. She went on to study a Criminal Law and Procedure Master’s degree, and is now training to be a teacher. She is clear in her advice for anyone unsure about higher education.
She added: “Attending the Open Day really did have a huge impact on me and changed my view of university and my firm choice on UCAS. There is something for everyone and it’s an unforgettable experience.
“In picking a university go for somewhere that feels right; if you want to stay close to home stay close to home, if you want somewhere that has a campus in the countryside, go for it. I chose Sunderland because it felt warm, friendly and people were happy, compared to other universities it just felt right.”
