Children should race down to Freeman’s Quay this half term for some simply splashing family fun – and a chance to try out the leisure centre’s huge new inflatable for free.
This Friday eight to 15-year-olds are invited to have a go on the bouncy 20 metre long pool attraction, which has been bought with help from the Durham Area Action Partnership.
Durham County Council’s cabinet member for leisure, libraries and lifelong learning, Cllr Maria Plews, said: “Last year visitors to the leisure centre said they would like to see more family swimming sessions and fun aquatic activities, including the reintroduction of an inflatable, which is something the Freeman’s Quay hasn’t had for some years.
“With support from the Durham AAP that has now been bought along with rafts and floats, and it will help us to offer a more fun and varied programme of activities for families living in and around the city centre.
“We hope that it will prove a great success, attracting more people to come and use the great facilities we offer.”
The new equipment – which sees two children race along tracks side by side, hoping they don’t fall off before reaching the final slide – will be used both during holiday periods and throughout the year. The rafts and floats will be used for weekly public sessions.
John Murphy from Durham AAP, which put £5,676 towards the equipment, said: “Freeman’s Quay can now hold lots of family-friendly activities in the pool and attract more visitors.
“I’m sure it’ll be a big hit with youngsters.”
To welcome the inflatable to the Freeman’s Quay pool the first session, from 2pm to 3pm on Friday 19 February, will be free for eight to 15-year-olds.
Places are limited and must be booked in advance by contacting the leisure centre, whether in person or by calling 03000 268 488.
Due to this event taking place there will be no public swimming available at Freeman’s Quay from 2pm to 3pm on Friday 19 February.
