IT’S time to limber up and get in shape to raise funds for a good cause!
Runners, walkers and charity fund-raisers are under starter’s orders for the popular 5k Riverside Run and CCG 2k Fun Run on Sunday, June 5.
The RunMiddlesbrough events have proved a huge draw for local runners, and organisers are urging runners to get their entries in early before the limit of 2,000 is reached.
The 5k – officially renamed the Ali Brownlee Cleveland Centre 5k earlier this month in tribute to the late BBC Tees’ Voice of the Boro – is now in its sixth year and continues to grow in popularity with runners of all abilities aged 13+.
Crowds turn out in force to cheer the runners on along the route from the Riverside Stadium past some of the town’s most striking landmarks including Temenos and the Transporter Bridge, before a memorable finish beside the hallowed turf inside the stadium.
The run creates a colourful cavalcade of fancy dress and novelty outfits, with many using the build-up and the race itself to raise vital funds for their chosen good cause.
And to get the ball rolling, representatives and mascots of some of the local charities taking part gathered this week for a gentle work-out at the Riverside Stadium.
Teesside Hospice Community Fundraiser Leanne Irvine said: “We are so pleased to have been chosen as the lead charity at this year’s RunMiddlesbrough events.
“As a small local charity we rely heavily on the support of the community to help us raise vital funds which directly benefit our patients and families facing cancer and other life limiting illnesses.
“Being a part of these iconic local runs is going to make a huge difference at our hospice!”
Councillor Lewis Young, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: “The Riverside Run 5k and CCG Fun Run are fantastic events that appeal to everyone, from serious athletes to charity fund-raisers.
“Over the years they’ve helped to make a real difference to some great local causes, and I’m confident we will see record turn-out for this year’s event.”
Martin Miles, area manager for Middlesbrough Council’s leisure services partner Everyone Active, said: “We’re really proud to be supporting these events.
“It’s important to us that everyone has the opportunity to get active and have fun doing it, and these runs caters for everybody, regardless of age, ability or experience.
“The funds raised have a huge impact on local charities and the people in our community who they support.
“We’re looking forward to seeing everyone on the day and making this the most successful event yet.”
