Cleveland Bridge is celebrating the achievements of two workers who have clocked up a combined 90 years’ service at the Darlington firm.

Stewart Oliver, 65, has worked for half a century in the maintenance department. Having progressed through a series of positions at the company, Stewart recently reduced his role as a Planned Maintenance Technician from full to part-time as part of a phased retirement.

In his 40 years with the company, Andy Lowes, 56, has been allocated a number of roles across various departments at Cleveland Bridge, most recently working as a maintenance fitter. The maintenance team, made up of ten employees, is responsible for everything from the refurbishing of equipment, to preventative maintenance, relocation and commissioning.

Cleveland Bridge UK Ltd has more than 150 years’ of experience in the fabrication and erection of steel bridges, high-rise buildings and other steel structures around the world. The company operates a 22-acre site in Darlington which has the capacity to process 1000 tonnes of steel per week.

Stewart Oliver said: “I can’t believe it’s been 50 years since I started at Cleveland Bridge but it’s been a career well-spent. My time in the maintenance department has been challenging, I can count the move to the new site in 1982 as one of the most complex things I’ve been involved with, but it’s facing big challenges and overcoming them that Cleveland Bridge and its employees really excel at.”

Andy said: “There’s such a sense of family at Cleveland Bridge, which definitely helps and the job is still enjoyable with every day that I come to work. The investments that the company continues to deliver are what makes such an established company feel fresh and exciting.”

Chris Droogan, Managing Director of Cleveland Bridge UK Ltd said “I would like to say a huge thank you on behalf of everyone at Cleveland Bridge for Stewart and Andy’s hard work and devotion to the job over the years.

“The loyalty and work ethic that Stewart and Andy have shown is a real inspiration across our workforce, particularly for our apprentices who can see the benefits of a long-term career with the company.”
