A group of students from The Hessle Academy have visited David Wilson Homes’ Tranby Fields development in Hessle, to find out more about the rewarding careers available in the construction industry from the experts on site.

The 15 students, aged 14-15 years old, were invited to visit Tranby Fields by the housebuilder, after expressing an interest in construction. They took part in an informal talk about their desired careers and the housebuilding sector in general before Contracts Manager, Andrew Devine, and Site Managers, Paul Dearnley and Steve Hunt, shared insight into the development of Tranby Fields.

The students then were split into two groups; one for those who were interested in trades and another for those interested in technical, before learning more about their desired roles from David Wilson Homes’ experts.

As Yorkshire’s biggest housebuilder, David Wilson Homes regularly invests in the training and education of young people in construction through school visits and college partnerships, as well as its apprenticeship, graduate and sponsored degree programmes. Senior staff often enjoy taking the time out of their busy schedules to meet and support the next generation of workers to help combat the skills shortage currently facing the construction industry.

Paul Dearnley, Site Manager at Tranby Fields commented: “I remember when I was starting out and in the same position as these students, so it’s nice to give something back. Many young people are unaware of the number of opportunities available to them in the construction industry. We hope visits to working sites like this will inspire them to explore a career in housebuilding.”

Michelle Edwards, Enrichment Coordinator at The Hessle Academy, commented: “It is brilliant that David Wilson Homes’ staff have offered their time to show our students around such an interesting site. These sort of visits are so valuable; getting out of the classroom, seeing potential careers in action and learning from the experts is brilliant for our students. It’s fantastic that skilled construction professionals are keen to support us in educating the next generation of workers, and in turn these young people may end up building the quality homes of the future.”

David Wilson Homes’ Tranby Fields development offers a stunning collection of three and four bedroom homes, available to purchase from £208,995. Surrounded by countryside and lovely farmland, Tranby Fields enjoys a peaceful community feel yet still has a great selection of town and city amenities in nearby Hessle and Hull.

In the National House-Building Council’s 2018 competition to find the best-run building sites in Britain, Tranby Fields and its Site Manager Paul Dearnley have been awarded with a prestigious Pride in the Job Award for the excellent standards on site.
