Double national praise for top performing primary school

Screen Shot 2016-05-26 at 15.26.22A TOP performing school is enjoying double success after winning national recognition for its work.

West Park Academy, Darlington, has been ranked in the top 10 per cent of schools nationally and has been given permission to become a multi-academy trust in order to share its expertise.

The Schools, Students and Teachers (SSAT) network has recognised the academy for its exceptional 2015 performance based on the Educational Outcomes data analysis.

Progress in reading, writing and maths was deemed significantly higher than the national average at Key Stage 2 and among the top 10 per cent of all schools nationally.

SSAT chief executive Sue Williamson said: “I have the privilege of visiting a lot of schools and I am always impressed by the creativity of teachers in engaging and inspiring their students.

“Recognising and sharing successes like this is at the heart of SSAT’s mission, so I’m delighted to congratulate West Park Academy on its achievement.”

The Department for Education has also granted an application to be a MAT, further recognition of the pioneering work being carried out at the school.

This will allow West Park Academy to work as a sponsor for another primary school which could be invited to join the trust.

Principal Catherine Thompson said: “I am delighted that the school has been recognised twice on a national stage for the work we do here.

“Both accolades are recognition of the unrelenting efforts of staff and pupils with the continued support of parents, governors and the community.”

She said being granted MAT status would allow the school to help others across the region.

“As a MAT we can maintain control of our own affairs in the future but also share the considerable expertise we have built up over the years with other schools,” Mrs Thompson said.

“Our skills range from prudent financial management to special educational needs, inclusion and educational health care planning. We are renowned as being a good school and it will be great to share our success with others.”
