Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Dundas Market provides a summer of fun for all ages

Middlesbrough’s Dundas Indoor Market is offering a Summer of Fun for Teessiders of all ages.

For younger visitors, and especially fans of Roald Dahl’s BFG, the market is one of the must-visit stops on Middlesbrough’s marvellous Book Benches Trail.

Each part of the trail – which also goes to Middlesbrough Central Library, MIMA and Dorman Museum – features a bench adorned in artwork based on a favourite book chosen by local readers. The artwork for the Dundas bench has been created by Hemlington Hub Library.

Children coming to Dundas will be able to take part in activities, read some or all of the BFG and gather a letter of the alphabet.  When they visit all 13 destinations the letters they collect will spell the name of a favourite book character. Successful completion of the trail could result in a prize of a book bundle.

Throughout the summer there are a series of events at Dundas to appeal to everybody: whether you are 70 or trying to occupy a seven-year-old.

For the over 50s there is an opportunity to go to the Ageing Better Café Meet Up. It takes place at Jean’s Kitchen in the indoor market on 21 August from 10am to noon and is a chance to make new friends – or catch up with people you already know – all over a free cuppa.

On Friday 26th and Saturday 27th July and Friday 30th and Saturday 31st there is a Food and Craft Market – which takes place in the main Dundas arcade. Shoppers will find stalls offering a wide variety of gifts, goods and services provided by independent local traders. The markets run from 10am to 4pm each day.

The main arcade will also host a Handmade and Vintage Market.  It is being held on Saturday 10th August and provides a showcase for the work of talented local crafters.  The Handmade and Vintage Market is also open from 10am to 4pm.

Dundas Indoor Market is one of a number of locations taking part in the Summer of Fun, which is being co-ordinated by Middlesbrough Council.  It encourages families to explore the town’s parks, historic buildings and shopping centres when they might have a bit more time.

As well as this summer’s special events, Dundas Indoor Market houses a diverse range of businesses. These include Middlesbrough’s first vegan supermarket, a shop selling products for pets and two new arrivals: Alt Box – which sells rock T-shirts – and IM Hair Design, an African hair salon.

“Because we have a lot of independent traders, Dundas isn’t your usual shopping centre,” said Dundas Indoor Market manager David Harris.  “If you haven’t been before it’s well worth a visit and as this is the English summer, at some point you’re going to need to find somewhere that’s out of the rain.”
