North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Family business links inspired Beth’s study aim

Beth graduated this summer from Teesside University with a first class BA (Hons) Business Management.  She now has a new role as a business development manager for a North-east distillery.

She said: “I was brought up in the heart of a family-run furniture retail business in Middlesbrough, so business has always been a prominent feature of my life. I believe I get my entrepreneurial spirit from my dad.”

Beth, 22, from Middlesbrough, added: “During the degree I completed a year-long placement, which was the best preparation for my career as I really got to learn about how businesses operate and put into practice all the things I had been learning in my course.

“I was able to apply my practical knowledge of the theories I had learned through academic study and use these as a base when talking to those involved in business and putting forward ideas regarding strategy to employers.”

Beth had initially started her degree studies at another university, but transferred to Teesside to complete the final academic year.

She said: “I decided to transfer to Teesside University for the final year of my degree as I wanted to feel that I was getting a greater level of support and I felt Teesside University could really offer that.”

Teesside University still has places available for undergraduate study in a range of courses. More information about how to apply can be found at www.tees.ac.uk/clearing.

Beth added: “I believe I am in the fortunate position of having had the experience of attending two universities and can see the comparisons between the two. Teesside University offered a very engaging course, materials and fantastic lecturers which I believe truly made a difference in my grades for my final year.

“I can honestly say that if I had been at Teesside University for the duration of my studies, my grades would have been consistently higher at the start of my studies.

“The course was engaging, current and well supported with thorough literature and expert lecturers. The facilities were fantastic with more than enough computers, excellent library facilities and a well-rounded support network.

“I love living in Teesside as it is a very friendly place with a great atmosphere and it has the added benefits of having lovely countryside but also beautiful coastal areas.”
