Commercial PhotographyMAKE-DO and mend is no longer a thing of the past. Stockton residents are now being offered the chance to learn the art of upcycling which gives new life to old garments.

Stockton Council’s Adult Education Service, Tees Achieve, is hosting an ‘Upcycling Your Clothes’ course, running for five weeks, which starts on Thursday 26 February, between 7pm – 9pm, at Billingham Community Centre costing £27.

Participants will learn the practical stages involved in transforming outfits into desirable fashion for both adults and children.

Anyone interested in the course is being encouraged to visit their local Butterwick Hospice branch where staff can advise on suitable pieces of clothing to bring along.

Tees Achieve is also offering a new sewing course. ‘What an Occasion’ runs for five weeks from Monday 2 March, between 6pm – 8pm, at a cost of £27 and is also held at Billingham Community Centre.

From parties to weddings, prom nights to a day at the races – the course will give learners the skills required to complete a garment fit for any special occasion.

Councillor Jim Beall, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Health, said: “The upcycling course is a great opportunity for people to try their hand at giving old items from their wardrobe a modern update at very little cost.

“Our ever popular sewing courses give both new and experienced learners a great deal of satisfaction and I would encourage anyone considering taking up a new hobby to give this or any other Tees Achieve course a go.”
