Residents across the Borough are being encouraged to attend the next meeting of South Tyneside Council’s Place Select Committee (Tuesday 21 June).
A range of issues are on the agenda including a presentation on the role and function of Scrutiny within the Council – highlighting the importance of the Committee in challenging policy and process on behalf of the people of the Borough.
The Committee will also discuss a potential commission on litter and fly-tipping. The commission would investigate the way that litter and fly tipping is tackled across the Borough and look to make any recommendations for improved ways of working.
Cllr Audrey Mcmillan, Chair of the Place Select Committee at South Tyneside Council said: “The area in which we live and our surroundings are things that are important to each and every one of us.
“We know that fly tipping and litter is something that is high on the agenda for our residents and we must do everything that we can to tackle it – working hand in hand with our partners and the local community.
“By scoping out and potentially setting up a commission to look into this issue we will be able to highlight good work being undertaken to tackle fly tipping across the Borough as well as making any recommendations for improved ways of working.”
Littering and fly tipping in particular is not only irresponsible, hazardous, unsightly and costly to clean up. It is a criminal offence. The Council and its partners take the issue of illegally abandoned waste extremely seriously and take action against anyone who can identify as being responsible.
Over the past ten years there has been a 60 per cent reduction in fly tipping incidents, the commission will look to see how this figure can be reduced even further.
Members of the press and public are welcome to attend the meeting, which takes place at 10am, on Tuesday 21 June, at Council Chamber, Town Hall, Jarrow.
